Saffron Walden Museum

Museum | Saffron Walden | England | United Kingdom

The Saffron Walden Museum is one of the oldest museums in Great Britain and offers an impressive collection ranging from prehistoric artifacts to contemporary artworks. The exhibitions cover various themes including archaeology, natural history, local history, ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture, woodworking, and world cultures. Special highlights include the Egyptian mummy of a child from the 3rd century AD and the extensive collection of Samurai armor.

The museum places a strong emphasis on interactive and family-friendly offerings. For example, children can dig in the archaeological sandbox, meet the lion Wallace, or explore the Centre for Natural History. There are regularly special exhibitions, activities, and events that take place throughout the year and always provide new experiences.

The museum is located in a historic building operated by the Saffron Walden Museum Society, a volunteer charity organization. The society supports the museum through lectures, events, and the care of the collections. The museum is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and provides a small parking lot and access for visitors with limited mobility.

This museum is very interesting and I stayed for 2 hours. The displays on local history and the wider north west Essex area were good. It's great value for £2.50!

This place was a hidden gem. As a family, we found it very cheap at £5 to get in. The variety of items on display was surprising. Both my children and I found different exhibits very interesting. We spent about 1-2 hours there and there is something for everyone at this museum.

The collection at this museum is amazing, covering everything from the ice age, Vikings, Egypt, and local history. The staff is very friendly and the location next to the castle and St Mary's church is great.

I visited this museum because I was in the area and I knew I could get in for free with Art Pass. However, there was some confusion at the entrance with the staff not recognizing the Art Pass. Despite this issue, I managed to get my money back. In general, the museum was alright but the experience at the entrance was frustrating.

This place caters to everyone and is truly a hidden gem. As someone over 65, I only paid £1.25 to get in and it's worth much more.

This museum is cheap and small, which is good for kids. It doesn't take too long to walk around, so they are less likely to get bored. They even provide little explorer rucksacks. However, there were quite a few kid-height exhibits with signs saying 'don't touch,' which can be challenging for small children. Overall, there are some interesting exhibits like a mummy and some creepy dolls.
